Operated by Rock Creek Lodge and available for CSG guided trips the Rock Creek Hut is the highest hut in California. At just over 10,200 feet this shelter allows access to some of the most rugged and scenic terrain in the High Sierra. Located just 30 minutes from Mammoth Mountain a 2-3 day trip into the Rock Creek Ski Hut is a quintessential addition to any real Mammoth vacation.
The Rock Creek Ski Hut has a moderate 5-mile approach up a groomed cross country trail system. From there it accesses a great variety of terrain. A short distance from the hut is the modest East Gullies of Mt. Starr as well as the low angle terrain off “the Shoulder.” For the more experienced and adventurous Mt. Dade, Mt. Abbott, and Treasure Peak are solid mornings skin. When avalanche conditions permit the highlights of this area, include the Cat Ears Couloir(1,000ft, 40°), the Hourglass Couloir (1,000ft, 35°) and the Northeast Couloir (2,500ft, 40°).
The Rock Creek Hut itself is a soft sided structure that can sleep up to 6 people. It is a small space with cots and just the basic amenities. A wood burning stove and propane lanterns make for a good evening atmosphere. Unlike other huts in California the Rock Creek Ski Hut is reserved by the group so that you never share the facility with other groups single individuals, helping to ensure solitude on your skiing adventure.
Due to the high altitude of this terrain, the snow in this zone tends to hold better and later into the year than in other parts of California. For these same reasons the steep slopes also tend to be more avalanche prone. Step terrain tends to be better accessed a little later in the ski season. Our guides are certified to both high avalanche and ski instruction criteria.
