Shasta Ski DescentSkiing from the top of Mount Shasta has been described as the “Finest Ski Descent in California” and listed as one of the “50 Classic Backcountry Ski Descents in North America".  Mount Shasta ski descent is considered a must do for any real backcountry skier.  It offers the advanced to expert alpine skier a descent of over 7,000 vertical ft. from the summit down via a variety of amazing routes including the “Classic” Avalanche Gulch Route.

Our two-day Mt Shasta Summit and Ski based on the Avalanche Gulch route though we try to maintain as much flexibility as possible going for best snow whenever possible.  On day one the group will have a quick meet and great to ensure everyone has the appropriate equipment.  Then we are off on our tour up, to establish an adequate high camp from where we can climb the mountain.  The day finishes with a quick snow and ski school.  We cover necessary crampon, ice ax, and self-arrest techniques.  All of these skills and training will build into a summit attempt and ski descent on the second day of the climb.

On day two we are off early on an alpine start for our climb to the summit.  If weather and route conditions permit we attempt to ski off the summit of Mt. Shasta though often it is safest and more fun to ski from just below.  The actual descent route varies based on snow conditions and the group's ability level.  Though regardless of the path skiing Mt. Shasta offers up some of the longest and continuous ski descents in the country.

Though Avalanche Gulch is considered a classic, it isn’t the only great route that Mt. Shasta has to offer.  The West Face, the Hotlum-Wintun Ridge, the Wintun snowfield, and the Clear Creek route all offer unique challenges, fantastic lines, and their varying degree challenge.  A carryover and ski down the North-side can be arranged as well for the backcountry adventurer who is in excellent condition and desires an exceptional ski adventure!
