Mt. Shasta Backcountry / Extreme Day
1 Day / Cost: Private 1:1: $795.00 Private 1:2 $725.00 per person
There is no more coveted Ski Mountaineering objective in California than skiing Mt. Shasta and none that has more bragging rights than climbing the mountain and skiing off the summit in a day. Our Shasta one-day summit and ski is the most physically demanding single day we offer. Though, the great effort comes with a great sense of accomplishment. While many people may be great skiers, few are both a good enough skier and have the physical endurance to complete such a significant objective.
The itinerary starts by meeting at our offices the afternoon before the climb for a quick meet and greet with one of our top guides. This meeting assures that our guests have the proper experience and equipment ready to go. After finalizing the itinerary with the group, it’s off to an early dinner and bed to get the necessary rest for the climb and ski.
Though the itinerary is customized for each group, most starts at 1 am from the parking lot at Bunny Flats. Most groups will employ basic ice ax, crampon, and rope skills to achieve the summit. For most people, the climb itself is a great accomplishment, but there is no better way of coming down than by making arching turns on a snowboard or skis.
“Remember that the summit is only half way, so climbers need to have enough strength left to enjoy the ski portion.”
While most guests opt for the Avalanche Gulch Route almost any route on the mountain is available. Perhaps the best is the carry over the option of ascending the Avalanche Gulch and the ever classic descent the Hotlum-Wintun route. All routes offer up to 7,000 ft. of continuous, uninterrupted skiable terrain.
